Ever since we opened the store our customers have been obsessed with gufi (owls). We have cups from Iittala with gufi, Ferm Living gufi cushions, gufi musical mobiles for babies, and gufi blankets.
Where does this gufi madness come from? Well, not all cultures find the gufo fun and cute. In parts of Africa the gufo was believed to be harbingers of death. The Aztecs and Mayians believed that gufos are a symbol of death and destruction. While, in the Middle East they are considered bad omens. But in Hinduism the gufo is the vahana, mount, of Goddess Lakshmi. And in Western cultures gufos are considered wise. This link goes back to ancient Greek where Athena, goddess of wisdom, had the gufo as a symbol.
When we went to London I found this little sewing kit at the Tate Modern Museum of the cutest gufi puppets. And of course the designer only sells them to the Tate Modern! Darn it! I, of course, looked into getting them for the store. Aren't they cute?!?
I have recently been making some little gufi with Marimekko fabric for Valentine's Day. I call it Gufi Love. Hope you enjoy them!
